Ten-Petal Anemone

(Anemone berlandieri)

Ranunculaceae

This plant is considered a cool season perennial although it sometimes comes up after rains during the summer. Unlike a lot of plants, there is a very small window when Ten-Petal Anemones are "out". All the plants start flowering at the same time and are finished in about one (to two) weeks.

Also commonly known as Ten-Petal Thimbleweed, Windflower, Southern Anemone, Basket Anemone, Granny's Nightcap and Texas Thimbleweed.

There is a bit of disagreement on whether this is the same plant known as Anemone caroliniana. Some scientists classify it as two separate species while some consider it the same.

> > QUESTION: How many petals does this flower have? Approximation is fine. (view answer below)

Scientific synonyms: Anemone caroliniana, Anemone caroliniana var. heterophylla, Anemone decapetala, Anemone decapetala var. heterophylla, and Anemone heterophylla.

> > ANSWER: None! What appears to be petals are actually sepals. This plant is a good example of why you cannot trust common names and should rely on scientific names anytime you need to be certain about a plant's identity. Ten-Petal Anemone can have 10-20 sepals that range in color from white to a bluish purple.
